Are Oil Based Serums Worth it?

Oil-based serums are nothing new to the world of skincare. Historians date some of the first serums and skincare formulations to Egypt in 10,000 BCE as both men and women would craft serums from natural oils to beautify themselves. Still to this day, oil-based serums are formulated with nourishing oils that can provide a range of benefits to the skin. Let’s get into why an oil-based serum is a must for your skincare routine.

Moisturizing

Oil-based serums are great for hydrating and moisturizing the skin. Many serums are formulated with natural oils like hempseed, jojoba, or avocado oil and have been shown to maintain the skin’s moisture barrier. This can help to reduce the appearance of dry, flaky, and dull skin and help your skin’s elasticity (hello plump and glowy!).

Anti-Aging

There are a lot of natural oil-based serums that are rich in antioxidants and vitamins that can help protect the skin from free radical damage. Free radicals are molecules that are unstable and can alter the skin’s cells and accelerate the aging process. Some oils such as Jojoba, Rosehip, and Almond oil have been found to prevent skin damage from UV radiation and slow down the production of fine lines and wrinkles.

Anti-Inflammatory

A lot of people reach for oil-based serums due to their anti-inflammatory properties. This is because some oils like Rosehip oil contain high unsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants that help protect against inflammation that lead to dry skin, irritation flare-ups, or redness.

Versatile

Oil-based serums can be used for a range of skin concerns. You can use your oil-based serum as a standalone product, or layer underneath your favorite face cream or sunscreen for additional hydration and UV protection. Depending on the serum, you could also use it with other skincare products like exfoliants or masks to enhance their effectiveness.

Using an oil-based serum on your face can be a great addition to your skincare routine for moisturizing, anti-aging, and anti-inflammatory benefits. When considering a new oil-based serum to add to your skincare routine, make sure to check the ingredients to see which properties you can benefit from.
